Georgia's Education Tax Credit Program
The program began in 2008 and, to date, has seen more than $1 Billion donated to this worthy cause. While it's technically called a "donation", it's different from the traditional understanding of donations because it's not extra money out of your pocket.
Donors are simply redirecting where a portion of their state income taxes go and who gets the benefit of their hard-earned money.
Georgia tax payers "donate" by pre-paying a portion of their state tax liability to a registered SSO like the Alyn Scholarship Fund and, in return, the State of Georgia provides a dollar-for-dollar state tax credit for the total amount of the donation. So, when a married couple donates $5,000 to ASF, the state income taxes they owe is reduced by that exact same amount.
There's no cost to donate!
Donating to this program does not take extra money out of someone's pocket as it's just the money they're required to paid in taxes anyway. But, by pre-paying a portion of these taxes and donating them to ASF, a donor's money can be used to support students at a GA private school of the their choosing; like Robert Toombs Christian Academy.
Through the Education Tax Credit Program, SSOs use the collected donations to award scholarships to students who meet the program's eligibility requirements. Over the past twelve years, this program has helped tens of thousands of students all across Georgia attend the private school of their choice.
It's important to note that while donors can determine which school(s) they wish to support with their donation, they cannot, in any way, determine or designate who specifically receives a scholarship or the dollar amount of scholarships.
This is also not a Quid Pro Quo system as donating has no bearing on a student's scholarship eligibility or the scholarship amount awarded.
